The Parish Walk Journey 2025

Parish 2025: I love to Walk.

So, the first thing you’re probably thinking is to lace up those trainers and hit the road, right? Not so fast! Before you even begin training, ask yourself this: What’s your target? Are you aiming for Rushen, making it to Peel for a pint and a crab bap, or are you bold enough to push beyond the limits of the human body and go all the way to the finish?

Let me tell you about my first attempt back in 2016. I confidently said those famous last words, “How hard can it be? It’s just a walk.” I was raising money for Walton Neurological Hospital, who at the time were caring for my (now late) younger brother. I truly believed I could finish it. Oh, how wrong I was! With only a handful of walks under my belt, most of them just a month before, and no more than four hours on my feet in one go, that was the extent of my so-called "training." Unsurprisingly, I retired in Bride, left with that bittersweet feeling of regret, knowing I hadn’t fully prepared for the challenge ahead.

Whatever your goal whether you're racing to Peel, powering through to Bride, or pushing for the finish line make sure that target is seared into your mind, crystal clear in your vision. Let your goal drive you, from mind to muscle, turning visualisation into action and propelling you toward success.

Day 1: Gear up for success!

One of the most crucial things to consider from the start is your clothing. Your training gear should mimic race day attire as closely as possible you’re basically rehearsing for the big event! From your trainers and socks to your shirt and bum bag, keep everything consistent to avoid any race-day surprises. It’s all about getting into the zone, both mentally and physically.

Don't forget, the parish could throw anything at you! Downpours? Galeforce winds? Who knows! So, mix it up training in a variety of conditions and outfits. From light vests to weatherproof layers, you’ll become more in tune with how your body reacts and it's needs to stay comfortable, whether you’re warming up or cooling down.

Most importantly, trainers are everything! Arguably, this is the most impetuous error made by first timers.

The wrong shoe choice is a rookie mistake that could sabotage even the best-prepared walker. You need to make sure you have the right selected shoes, that are comfortable and ideally lightweight. Sizing your shoes is as much of a unique preference, much like our favourite mid walk snacks, we all prefer things a little different. The general rule of thumb however, is to go half a size larger than you would typically, and not doing up your laces up too either, keep them a little slacker as your feet will be swelling the longer you are stomping along, out on the course!

I'll be posting every Sunday from now on, so make sure you're tuned in! Expect to see exciting training workouts, tips on fuelling your body through training, and race-day advice too. I’m really hoping you can master it all from the very start. After all, this is the legendary Parish Walk – let's kick things off on the right foot! Keep those eyes peeled!
